SOUND OF THE WEEK!

This week marks the beginning of our "Sound of the Week" activities!
Look on the right side of our blog on Mondays to find out the new letter sound, animal of the week, and password!

MONDAY~
We will reveal what the new letter sound is. We will meet an animal character which begins with the sound and hear a story about the character. We also recognize friends in our class whose first or last name begins with the letter sound of the week. We will also learn what the password is which is the word the children need to "read"/say when they enter the classroom in the morning for that week. Your child will bring/wear something home that begins with the sound of the week. We do this to help them remember to tell you what the new sound is. It also gets them excited about the new letter sound!

TUESDAY~We will reread our story and practice reading a cheer for the letter sound, identifying all the words in the cheer which begin with the sound of the week. We will also share/discuss facts about the animal character for the week.

WEDNESDAY~SOUND BOX SHARING: Each child should bring in 1 to 5 items beginning with the "SOUND of the Week". If the items are small, please put them in a ziplock bag marked with your child's name. During the morning, each child will have an opportunity to share the items he/she brought in with a small group of classmates. The items are taken back home at the end of the morning/day. We will also reread our story.

THURSDAY~SOUND BOX SHARING: Once again, we ask that each child bring in 1-5 items (different from those brought in on Wednesday) beginning with the "SOUND of the Week".

FRIDAY~We will reread our story one last time. Then, each child will make a small copy of the story to bring home to reread/share with you! We will also put something on a large cardboard letter (beginning with the letter sound) to hang in our classroom.

REMEMBER: Try to let your child find his/her sound box items on his/her own with your assistance when necessary. If you find the items for your child, the activity is not as meaningful for them and he/she won't feel ownership for the items brought in.

Also, find items that begin with/focus on the SOUND. For example, your child could bring in a phone when we do the letter "F" or a (plastic) knife when we do the letter "N". Your child will not want to bring in cheese or chocolate when we do the letter sound "C", as this begins with the /CH/ sound, not the /C/ sound.
