FREE CHOICE FUN!

Maggie and Shaia reading/reciting the nursery rhymes we've been learning.  They are using a pointer to follow along with the words.

In the photos below, Paige and Eleanor are trying the new sound discrimination activity Mrs. "B" introduced last week.

Tommy and Evan put their building skills to work!
Working on a picture depicting the pumpkin poem we are learning.
In the photos below, Beckett and Tommy are painting part of an egg carton pink.  We needed to let the paint dry overnight.  Tomorrow we will make something with these to remind us of the sound of the week!  Stay tuned!

WEEK OF 10/18/10

We have a busy, fun week in Pre-K!  Here are the details:

Tuesday October 19th--Campfire Stories and S'Mores
~Children should dress appropriate for the weather and this outdoor event (boots, tennis shoes, jeans, sweatshirts, etc.).  We will depart the Pre-K classroom at 8:30 with our second grade buddies and head for the woods.  We will enjoy stories around the campfire told by the Lower School librarians (Mrs. Mullin and Ms. Oeth) and a special snack (s'mores and hot chocolate).

Friday October 22nd--Pre-K Pajama Party
~Children should come to school dressed in their pajamas!!  Children can wear regular shoes and then bring a pair of slippers to change into once they are at school if they would like.  We would also like for children to bring in one favorite item with which they like to sleep (teddy bear, blanket, stuffed animal, etc.).   We will enjoy eating pancakes at 8:30.  Pancakes and Pajamas--what a PERFECT way to celebrate learning about the letter sound /P/!

SOUND REVIEW/SOUND DISCRIMINATION

Today we did a group activity to review the five letter sounds we have studied.  First, a child would choose a card from inside a bag.
Following our group sound review activity, Mrs. "B" showed us an activity we can do during Free Choice time to review our knowledge of the letter sounds.
In the photo below are "sound drawers".  Each drawer has a different letter on the front and contains various objects beginning with that letter sound.
To do this activity, a child chooses two different drawers and takes out a work mat.
Next, the child puts a picture of the letter character on each side of the work mat.
The child dumps the objects out of the drawers and mixes them.
Finally, the child determines which sound he/she hears at the beginning of the name of the object and places it under the corresponding letter.

FEELINGS

Today we read a story about feelings called, The Story Of My Feelings.  We discussed that our feelings aren't right or wrong; it's okay to feel the way you do; and that not everyone feels the same way about something.   We also discussed what we can do if we feel angry, sad, disappointed, etc.  The photos below are from our "Second Step" program.  We used them to discuss ways we can determine how someone feels by looking at his/her face.  Finally, we used our Weekly Reader to practice what we learned today about feelings.

FREE CHOICE FUN!

Children can practice counting skills and one-to-one correspondence by putting the correct amount of stickers on the apple or leaf.

First, the child rolls the die...

and puts the corresponding number of scarecrows in a bowl...

The child then dumps the scarecrows and pumpkins into a 3rd bowl.  He/She counts the total number of objects in the 3rd bowl and puts the correct number in the last space.

"HICKORY, DICKORY DOCK"

Today we recited the nursery rhyme, "Hickory Dickory Dock".  We identified the rhyming words we heard and also came up with ideas about why the mouse ran up the clock and then ran down the clock after the clock struck one.  Here were some of the ideas....

The mouse ran up the clock because...
...he saw a piece of cheese.
...he wanted to find out what time it was.
The mouse ran down the clock because...
...it was bedtime.
...it was time for lunch.
...it was time for a snack.
...he was scared when the clock made noise when it struck one.
